Kelly Clarkson's charm, talent shine through in concert at Trump Taj Mahal

Posted in : Concerts & Performance

(added few months ago!)

Somewhere along her pop music journey, Clarkson, the breakout winner of the inaugural season of “American Idol,” has earned a reputation for two things — singing angry-but-infuriatingly-catchy breakup anthems such as “Since U Been Gone” and “Walk Away,” and trying to shake off the “Idol” label that made her a household name 10 years ago. But if Clarkson’s sold-out show Sunday night at the Trump Taj Mahal’s Mark G. Etess Arena proved anything, it’s that Clarkson doesn’t have a chip on her shoulder. She has a message. She is her own woman.

Kelly Clarkson's charm, talent shine through in concert at Trump Taj Mahal

Wearing tight black pants that accented her curves (Clarkson has been the subject of negative press for her fluctuating weight) and a sequin top, Clarkson, backed by an 8-piece band, stood behind a screen while the words “fat,” “failure” and “girl next door” flashed across the screen. Behind her appeared more newspaper headlines: “Make-up mishap for Clarkson.” “Record label drops Clarkson.”As she began to sing the words to her single “Dark Side” from her latest release “Stronger” —  “Nobody’s picture perfect … do you love me?” — it was instantly clear why fans feel a bond with the singer.

Even after a fast rise to fame that could give anyone a head trip, Clarkson remains surprisingly relatable, almost embracing any criticisms about her style or appearance. But for the unmistakable, pitch-perfect voice, it almost seemed like it could be any well-mannered girl in the audience on the stage, having a conversation with a few thousand people. “OK, so not to brag, but I played Wheel of Fortune yesterday,” Clarkson told the audience after a few songs. “And this kid (pointing to herself) hit the $1,000 jackpot. There is some security footage somewhere that is hilarious. I flipped out like I had just won a man.”Even her band introductions were adorable.

“Ya’ll don’t realize this, but I would really suck without them,” Clarkson told the crowd. For someone who did fight for her “Idol” independence by the time album No. 3 rolled around, Clarkson had no qualms about discussing her time on the show, even thanking fans for their votes and their loyalty a decade after emerging as the show’s winner. Staying true to her “Idol” roots, Clarkson even let fans request favorite songs through her Web site. She ultimately chose “The War is Over,” requested by an Atlantic City fan. “Since the beginning of my career, you all have been involved, voting and all,” she told the crowd. “So you still get some control.”

Clarkson’s show was surprisingly low-key in terms of the staging, with minimal lighting and costume changes — one of the cooler tricks was a giant hologram of Jason Aldean singing alongside Clarkson for their country duet “Don’t You Wanna Stay.”But the pared-down show kept the focus where it belonged, which is on Clarkson’s voice. Her cover tunes — which sometimes can be a low point in a show — were well-chosen favorites such as Florence and the Machine’s “Heavy in Your Arms” and fellow “Idol” Carrie Underwood’s “I Know You Won’t.”

Opening for Clarkson was singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson, whose blend of folk/pop/rock was a nice match for Clarkson’s radio-friendly style. Nathanson mostly played tracks from his latest album, “Modern Love,” along with a few fun covers (his medley of Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” and Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” managed to not sound too cliché), and seemed to find some common ground with the Clarkson fans who embrace those famous breakup anthems. “How many people here have been in a relationship with someone who is, say, evil?” Nathanson asked.
The crowd erupted. Looks like any spurned lovers came to the right show after all.

Kelly Clarkson Talks Eating Disorders, Guns And Ron Paul In NPR Interview

Kelly Clarkson Talks Eating Disorders, Guns And Ron Paul In NPR InterviewKelly Clarkson had quite the revealing interview with NPR’s All Things Considered earlier this week, and her in-depth sit-down — in which she frankly discusses having an eating disorder in high school, her love of booze and karaoke, and why she sleeps with a gun at night — proves once again that the Stronger singer always tries to be her authentic self while being thrust in the spotlight. (And yes, she comments on that Ron Paul controversy: “Something I tweet makes CNN. That says something about our world right there.”) We’ve rounded up the seven best quotes Clarkson gave up for NPR listeners —

7 CLASSY QUOTES FROM KELLY CLARKSON’S NPR INTERVIEW
:: On why she turned down her first record deal offer at the age of 18: “The one contract that I was offered – this was my favorite thing ’cause I deal with it on the daily now – I literally weighed 124. They told me if I lost 20 pounds that they’d sign me. And I was like, wow. And I had, like, an eating disorder in high school for a bit, so it’s like, I think God kind of put me through that to, you know, make me stronger for when situations like that kind of come up and still come up, obviously.”

:: On why she owns nine guns and even sleeps with a Colt 45: “I live alone, so I’m not going out like that. I got no chance if some man breaks into my house.”

:: She’s easily convinced to pair up for karaoke when she’s intoxicated: “And by that time, I’m so drunk, I’m like, yeah, let’s duet. Like, I’m like dueting with people.”

:: On the whole Ron Paul Twitter frenzy: “I was, like, sitting at home with my brother watching Leno. And, you know, he was on Leno, and I was like, man, I was like, I like this dude. I liked him the last time around. I like a lot, you know, he believes in states having their rights, and I think that that’s very important. And I’ve always been about less government, and so I like him. And that’s – it’s as simple as that, man. That’s all I said. I was like, oh, man, I like Ron Paul. Too bad he’s probably not going to get the nomination, but I, you know, I like him. And then the whole freakin’ world, like, it went into a frenzy.”

:: On the bump in digital sales after her endorsement: “I did enjoy the sales, I’ll tell you that… I was like, hell, I’m going to start endorsing everybody… I was like I’m just going to start saying names about stuff to get people to buy my album.”

:: On her humble beginnings: “Oh, my God. I lived, like, on a mattress, like, with this crazy girl. We lived in, like, a room with, like, these people’s house and, like, they didn’t allow us to use their kitchen. So we had, like, a little refrigerator. Like, it was really funny… I had, like, four jobs. I worked for like, coffee shops, waitressing. I did extra jobs. After that four or five months of living out there, we saved money to move into this apartment. And literally, the day that the crazy girl and I moved into the apartment, it burned down.”

:: On the hardest part of being a pop star: “Literally, the answer is probably real sad, but it’s to just to be me. Like, it’s really hard, because I think people, you know, have a set idea of what a pop star should be. And my whole point is like, well, if I’m the pop star, then it should be whatever I am. There’s, you know, room for Katy Perrys and Adeles and Rihannas and Lady Gagas and Ke$has and me and Pinks. I think what’s great about all of us is that we represent something different.”

Listen to the entire interview here, and head to ONTD for a transcript. And get ready for Kelly to take over your TV when sings the National Anthem at the Super Bowl on February 5 and performs at The Grammys on February 12.

Kelly Clarkson sings conservatives' blues

Posted in : Gossips

(added few months ago!)

Kelly Clarkson sings conservatives' bluesEvery campaign has its song. That song isn't always the one the candidate chooses. In 2008, John McCain revealed that he liked "Dancing Queen" by ABBA. The senator's staffers allowed that the theme of "Rocky" might also suit the pugnacious one.

But the McCain campaign track of 2008 should probably have been "Love Song" by Sara Bareilles. As in "Not going to write you a ..." McCain wanted voters. They just didn't want McCain back. Finally, they told him so.

The 2012 race is doing its predecessors one better. Republicans are finding themselves with not just a song, but a singer: Kelly Clarkson. In 2002, Clarkson was one of the first to demonstrate the power of "American Idol," the musical equivalent of the Iowa caucuses, to make a nobody into a superstar. The song she performed on the show, "A Moment Like This," shot to No. 1 on the charts.

Clarkson is deservedly popular in families with preteens. But maybe she is also a Republican prophetess. Her songs seem to capture the dynamic of the party's struggles this campaign. And through her wide, glorious, three-octave range, Clarkson tells us this party is becoming perilously narrow.

On Twitter, Clarkson made clear her personal preference among the Republican field — Ron Paul — just a few days before Paul placed third in the Iowa caucuses. And her song "Breakaway," conveys why the Texas congressman is newly appealing to primary voters this time around.

"Breakaway" began its life humbly, as a soundtrack song for "Princess Diaries II: Royal Engagement," a preteen fantasy film that features the improbable sight of Julie Andrews snowboarding down a staircase on a mattress. But the song has power. And, like the libertarian Paul, fits the desperate mood of Republican voters dissatisfied with all that the party offers — whether that is tame updates of old entitlement policy or stale social conservatism.

"Grew up in a small town" — a very small town, where the Republican National Committee rules. "And when the rain would fall down, I'd just stare out my window" — and hope to see something beyond anti-abortion posters. "Want to feel the warm breeze, sleep under a palm tree, feel the rush of the ocean" —- preferably in a state with medical marijuana.

"I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change. And break away" — escape that Grand Old Party combo of social conservatism and tax credits. Then there's Clarkson's "Mr. Know It All." That's Newt Gingrich. "Oh you think that you know me" — but maybe you don't. Newt's genius is that he knows a lot. But it's also a failing because he doesn't listen. That's what voters were saying when they turned away from him in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Finally, there's "Because of You," another of Clarkson's hits. It's supposedly about how divorcing parents permanently stunt the emotional lives of their offspring and terrify the kids through door slamming, pill popping, suitcase flinging and other marital histrionics.

Call me a family-dynamics imbecile. But having listened to Clarkson belt out "Because of You" approximately 120 times at the breakfast table, I will tell you that it isn't about families. It's about Mitt Romney. Or at least the party culture he personifies.

As recently as the 1990s, the Republican Party was capable of being a rough, joyous, go-over-the-waterfall-in-a-barrel sort of party. That started to shift to caution in the past decade. And now the prospect of four more years of President Barack Obama so panics the party leaders that they're losing their ability to frame an inspiring and radical conservative program.

Romney's positions are more a medley of talking points derived from opinion-poll research than a single philosophy. Romney, who has won the first two contests in this election, is a walking warning to Republicans that they had better back meek, logical compromise policies. In other words, as a candidate, he plays to fear.

"Because of you ... I never stray too far from the sidewalk."Romney's campaign pitch is that he should be elected because he's electable. Talk to donors, and you hear over and over again that they're getting behind Romney because they have to.

"Because of you ... I find it hard to trust, not only me, but everyone 'round me."Especially, for conservatives, plausible candidates such as Jon Huntsman or Rick Perry or, until Iowa, Michele Bachmann. These candidates have strengths, such as knowledge of China (Huntsman) or wisdom on immigration (Perry). Rick Santorum makes the best case among them for not breaking away. But they aren't doing as well as they could be, merely because they aren't considered "safe."

Apparently, Republicans believe that if they don't pick Romney, and yesterday, we'll all go down in some kind of Democratic-Socialist apocalypse. "Because of you ... I am afraid."

What happened to election year as sport?

Nothing wrong with Clarkson. The problem is with the Republicans' premature decision to confine the choice in this election to one between escapism (Paul) and fear (Romney). Whichever candidate wins the primary, he'll stand a better chance against Obama if he puts forward a multiple-octave program that reflects big conservative principles.

Because the irony about "safe" is that it often has a hard time winning general elections. Safe was the message of Bob Dole, the Kansas senator who opposed President Bill Clinton.

Kelly Clarkson Set to Perform National Anthem at Super Bowl XLVI

Posted in : Concerts & Performance

Kelly Clarkson Set to Perform National Anthem at Super Bowl XLVIAll eyes will be on Kelly Clarkson on Feb. 5, when she tackles the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLVI. After Christina Aguilera famously flubbed the lyrics at last year's game, the former "American Idol" winner faces the arduous task of belting out the opening number -- lyrics in tact. Shortly after The Associated Press reported the news, Clarkson retweeted an article via her Twitter account, confirming the performance. The NFL has not yet officially made the announcement, but is expected to later this month.

While Clarkson will take on anthem duties, "The Voice" coach Blake Shelton and wife Miranda Lambert will sing "America the Beautiful."Coincidentally, Clarkson and Shelton will also be teaming up when the singer appears as a guest mentor on the popular NBC singing competition program, which premieres Feb. 5 after the game.

In 2011, Christina Aguilera messed up the lyrics to the National Anthem, with the video of her flub going viral. "That night I knew, I just made myself a Trivial Pursuit question. 'In 2011 what female singer, ya know, flubbed the lyrics.' It's just insane," said the singer of the incident. Clarkson's fellow "Idol" winner Carrie Underwood also took on the anthem in 2010. Super Bowl XLVI will take place in Indianapolis on Feb. 5, with kick-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST.

Kelly Clarkson was one of the stars who appeared on "Saturday Night Live" over the weekend and helped the show gain its highest ratings in one year. She delivered flawless performances on the episode which was hosted by Charles Barkley.

The winner of "American Idol" season 1 sang two singles, "Mr. Know It All" and "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)", both of which come from her latest studio album "Stronger". She donned a maroon mini dress when performing the former, and rocked a black ensemble when playing the latter.

"SNL was so much fun last night! Thank you everybody for all the sweet comments :) back in rehearsals today for tour. It's gonna be a killer show! I can't wait for y'all to see it!" Kelly tweeted.

Before the airing of the show, the Texan-born singer expressed her interest to do a sketch. "My skit I wanted to do was 'The Voice'. I wanted Charles Barkley to be on his knees and play Cee-Lo [Green] and I wanted to be Christina," she said. "I just love that show, so I wanted to totally make fun of it. I make fun of things I like!"

She herself has been tapped as one of the guest mentors in the upcoming season of the talent show. She's set to team up with Miranda Lambert to help Blake Shelton coach his team. The other guest mentors are Lionel Richie, Jewel Kilcher, Babyface, Ne-Yo, Alanis Morissette and Robin Thicke.

Kelly Clarkson Talks About Reuniting With 'SNL' 'Family'

Posted in : Gossips

(added few months ago!)

Kelly Clarkson Talks About Reuniting With 'SNL' 'Family'This weekend, Kelly Clarkson is making her third appearance on "Saturday Night Live" as the musical guest. But the bubbly singer insists that being a part of NBC's iconic show will never feel old hat.

"I'm a three-peat! I've made it," Clarkson exclaimed to MTV News when we caught up with her at rehearsals. "It's a legendary stage! I've been watching it since I was a kid. I think we all have."

More so than the enormity of playing Studio 8H, Clarkson said she digs the vibe of the cast and crew. "It's a fun environment. You don't feel like you're working ... This is like a family place. Everybody here is nice to people who aren't famous. You know what I'm saying? They're nice to my makeup artist, my hair guy ... I hate people who are just nice to famous people. It bothers me. I want to kick 'em," she chuckled.

Clarkson still thinks about her first appearance on "SNL" in 2005, when she became the first "American Idol" winner to snag a musical guest spot. Even cooler, she got to flex her comedic muscles in a couple of skits with former cast members Amy Poehler and Horatio Sanz. "I remember I was so excited. First of all, Horatio? He's hard to do skits with because you laugh 'cause he laughs all the time at [himself]. So you're laughing 'cause he's laughing, and I'm trying to keep a straight face. I had so much fun."

But this go-around, Clarkson's too busy to participate in any sketches, even though the politically charged "SNL" could write comedy gold for Clarkson, who recently found herself in the middle of the presidential race when she casually tweeted about digging Ron Paul's campaign. The singer's always down to poke fun at herself and be goofy, but alas, tour rehearsals are top priority. "We're literally flying in and out [of New York]. Charles Barkley's hosting, so he's doing all the skits."

Kelly fans can still look forward to two high-energy performances. During Saturday night's show, Clarkson and her band will rock her #1 single, "Mr. Know It All," as well as her latest hit, "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)."
