Currently on tour in promotion of her latest studio album ‘Stronger’, former American Idol contestant turned pop star Kelly Clarkson honored the late legendary singer Etta James, who passed away this past January 20th.

KELLY CLARKSON PAYS TRIBUTE TO ETTA JAMES WITH ‘I’D RATHER GO BLIND’

After receiving the news that James had died in the hospital in Riverside, California, Clarkson took the time to perform what she called one of her favorite blues songs from the ‘At Last’ singer’s extensive collection of songs.  Talking to her fans while rocking the stage at the Radio City Music Hall in New York per Just Jared, Clarkson surprised the crowd with ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’.

“This isn’t At Last’ because everyone really covers that and so I wanted to do my favorite, actually. My favorite song is ‘I’d Rather Go Blind.’ So, this is for Etta!”

Two days prior Clarkson had also tweeted her sadness over the loss of Etta James.  “Sad news . she was great : (.”  Before taking the stage in New York, Clarkson sent a message to her fans about her upcoming performance in the Big Apple.  "I'M SO EXCITED THAT WE'RE PLAYING RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL TONIGHT!!!! I can't take it!! It's too much haha!! New York, are you ready?!!!"  Adding after the show, "I LOVE NEW YORK!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!! SUCH A GREAT NIGHT WOOHOOOOOOO :) :) :)."

Kelly Clarkson has been on the road since mid January.  Her ‘Stronger’ Tour will continue on through April when she will finish off her travels in San Diego’s Valley View Casino Center.  Watch Clarkson's performance of 'I'd Rather Go Blind'

Graceful Kelly Clarkson’s everywoman appeal just grows stronger

Posted in : Gossips

Graceful Kelly Clarkson’s everywoman appeal just grows strongerKelly Clarkson stands out by being average. Clarkson is such a Plain Jane, it would be hard to pick her out of a crowd. But put the original “American Idol” next to Beyonce, Britney and Lady Gaga, and suddenly one of these things is not like the other. This is the trick to Clarkson’s repeated rebounds.

Since winning the first “Idol” crown in 2002, Clarkson — who plays the Wang Theatre tomorrow — has bounced between A-lister and underdog. Her 2004 hit “Since U Been Gone” was one of the top pop tunes of the last decade. Three years later, she pushed darker, less mainstream material on “My December” and the album flopped. In 2009, she roared back with chart-topping single “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Then she released three follow-up singles that missed the Top 10.

All these ups and down — her latest up being her “Saturday Night Live” performance last month — but her career has never flat-lined. Why? Because there’s no one like her. Well, there’s no one in pop like her. Take away her impressive voice and Kelly is the girl next door: no skimpy Catholic school girl outfits, no dresses made of cold cuts, no trysts with Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer or A-Rod.

Instead of videos that look like S&M parties, she hides her normal body in normal clothes and acts the goof. She’s the kind of pop star you’d like to have a beer with — mostly because the other pop stars drink Dom Perignon, Remy Martin and bottled water from some mountain spring in Fiji.

When the “Idol” producers began scouring the masses for an unknown with pipes of gold, they were hunting for Clarkson. After Carrie Underwood, Clarkson is the best-selling “Idol” alum. Her 11 million albums sold in the States tops numbers by Chris Daughtry, Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson and 60 other contestants who came away from the show with record contracts.

There’s always another pop tart looking to take down Britney. Lady Gaga, Ke$ha and Rihanna constantly battle over Madonna’s shock queen crown. But nobody’s gunning for Clarkson. Eventually someone is going to figure out her formula and take her down. Until then, she’ll keep coming back with that big, baby-faced smile and a fresh, cute pop song.

Kelly Clarkson Tourmate Calls Opening Act Gig A 'Prize Fight'

Posted in : Gossips

(added 3 days ago)

Kelly Clarkson Tourmate Calls Opening Act Gig A 'Prize FightAs Kelly Clarkson kicks off 2012 with her highly anticipated Stronger tour, MTV News caught up with her opening act, singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson. Clarkson fans may recognize Nathanson from his single "Come On Get Higher," which received heavy radio play in 2008, as did 2011's "Faster." His latest single, "Run," is a catchy duet with Jennifer Nettles (from superstar country duo Sugarland) that appears on his current album, Modern Love. For those who have yet to hear Nathanson's music, it can best be described as acoustic rock with touches of pop and country. He cited a wide range of musical influences, including U2, Poison, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Van Halen.

Nathanson will also be playing several headlining shows while he tours with Clarkson. He opened up about different being an opening act is compared to having your own show. "Opening shows are more like you've got to go out and win them over," he said. "It's like clubbing people over the head and dragging them back to your cave. It's like a prize fight. You go out and just grab them and drag them back and make them yours."

"When I have a headline show, I think of it as a party and I'm sort of like the host," he explained. The tour is already underway in the U.S., and Nathanson says he's having a great time. "There's always a moment where you walk out to someone else's audience and you don't know what you're going to get," he described. "Kelly's audience is different than my audience, and it takes them a while to get used to me and me a little while to get used to them. And then once you make that connection, you're in. It's fun!" Nathanson is currently touring to promote his latest album, Modern Love, and will stick with Kelly for the remainder of her North American leg of the tour.

Kelly Clarkson Croons Tribute to Etta James

Posted in : Gossips

(added 4 days ago)

Kelly Clarkson’s unusual yet electric career came full-circle on Saturday night at Radio City Music Hall, as her performance paid respectful tribute to the late Etta James. Clarkson’s introduction to the music industry came by way of the first season of a little show called American Idol, and American audiences heard Clarkson’s voice for the very first time when she auditioned with the time-honored and familiar Etta James classic “At Last”. She made her mistakes, just like they all do, but the voice was undeniable (unable to embed video flashback, but you can see it here).

Kelly Clarkson Croons Tribute to Etta James

During her Saturday night performance, Clarkson appeared onstage beneath a screen blaring cruel descriptors (“fat,” “failure”) and fake headlines — “Kelly Clarkson is fat,” “Makeup mishap for Kelly” — setting the stage for what would ultimately be a very emotional performance, full of angst, and showcasing Clarkson’s full range of capability.

Starting with “Behind These Hazel Eyes” and “Since U Been Gone,” and then going on to explore the rest of her well-known catalogue, Clarkson’s performance later took a dark turn with a vindictive “Never Again,” followed by an emotional and delicate “Because of You.” Most engagingly, Clarkson paid tribute to James, who died Friday, with a respectfully restrained version of “I’d Rather Go Blind,” followed by a lively “My Man.”

Clarkson has admitted she’s not much of a performer, and her voice indeed does most of the heavy lifting – not unlike the monolithic singer Clarkson borrowed a tune from to get her start. I’d wager a guess that while we lost a legend, Clarkson gained a guardian angel.

What do you think of Kelly Clarkson’s career? Is she following in the footsteps of Etta James, or picking up where she left off?

KELLY CLARKSON ASKS FANS TO SUPPORT TEACHERS

Posted in : Gossips

(added 6 days ago)

Kelly Clarkson recently raised the ire of some of her fans when she announced her support for GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul, but we’re pretty sure she’ll avoid controversy with her latest bid for support — a PSA through iHeartRadio urging listeners to help out public school teachers.

KELLY CLARKSON ASKS FANS TO SUPPORT TEACHERS

“Hey, what’s up y’all, this is Kelly Clarkson,” she says in the audio-only announcement. “I want to talk to you right now about helping out a teacher. Our schools today don’t have basic supplies and resources for students to thrive. Donorschoose.org is an online charity that makes it easy for you to give to a classroom in need. Donate to donorschoose.org and pick from over 25,000 classroom requests to fulfill — like musical instruments!”

Clarkson knows firsthand how much of a difference an educator can make in a student’s life — her journey to pop stardom started in seventh grade, when a teacher heard her singing in the halls and encouraged her to join the school choir. That’s a pretty dramatic example, but Clarkson’s story (and the PSA) underscores a great point: most of us have benefited from the support and/or wisdom of a teacher.

We LOVE Kelly Clarkson's Cover Of Cee Lo Green's 'Forget You'!

Posted in : Gossips

(added 7 days ago)

Could Kelly Clarkson be any cuter? Not only does she look adorable (fess up on where you got that sequined blazer, sister), but she also takes cover requests from fans! The "You Love Me" singer's been asking her fans what songs they want her to cover while on her Stronger tour. She explained last week at her gig in Connecticut: "Everybody's always asking me to sing their favorites and lord, I can't get to them all. So I thought I'd do a request thing online... and ask y'all what y'all wanted to hear." The most recent winner: Cee Lo Green's "Forget You."

We LOVE Kelly Clarkson's Cover Of Cee Lo Green's 'Forget You'! (VIDEO)

Unsurprisingly, Kelly's cover of "Forget You" is basically perfection. Backed by her band, Kelly put her classic R&B-tinged pop spin on Cee Lo's record, and we have to admit, we're kind of obsessed. While she didn't change up the melody too much, it doesn't even matter -- Kelly covering Cee Lo (or pretty much anyone) is pure magic. And, of course, Kelly's a family gal so she left all the curse words out. Props for keeping it clean for the kiddies!

While we're sure Kelly Clarkson's fans have already suggested some killer records for her to cover, I'd like to take this opportunity to beg suggest a cover of the best song ever written Mariah Carey's "Hero."  My name is spelled J-E-N-N-A  R-U-B-E-N-S-T-E-I-N, and, yes, a shout-out would be appreciated.

The first wave of performers have been announced for the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards and they include nominees Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift. Aldean and Minaj will perform on the GRAMMY telecast for the first time, while Clarkson, Foo Fighters, Mars, and Swift are returning to the GRAMMY stage. Of course, this is only a handful of performers, so keep it tuned as additional performers and presenters will be announced soon.

GRAMMY Awards 2011: Kelly Clarkson, Jason Aldean, Burno Mars, Foo Fighters, Announced as Performers

Foo Fighters and Mars each have six nominations, while Minaj has for nominations. Both Aldean and Swift have 3 nods and TRT’s favorite and two-time GRAMMY winner Kelly Clarkson is nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Don’t You Wanna Stay” (with Jason Aldean). Obviously, we’re most excited to see Clarkson and Aldean belt out “Don’t You Wanna Stay” but also interested to see what Bruno Mars puts together for the show.

Kelly Clarkson at the Times Union Center, 1/17/12

Posted in : Gossips

(added 9 days ago)

Kelly Clarkson at the Times Union CenterALBANY – It seems almost impossible to believe that it’s been 10 years since Kelly Clarkson was crowned the inaugural “American Idol.” But in the ensuing decade she’s made a forgettable movie, five albums (including her latest, “Stronger”) and countless television appearances (including ”Saturday Night Live” earlier this month).

And on Tuesday evening, Clarkson roared into the Times Union Center with an arena-worthy concert that showcased a voice and a personality that proved that she does indeed have staying power. And star power, too.

Backed by an eight-piece band, she launched into her 95-minute show with the seriously rocking “Dark Side” and “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” before tossing in one of her biggest hits, “Since U Been Gone,” re-made and re-modeled with a throbbing, fuzzed-out bassline and an irresistable techno pulse as the foundation for her hook-filled pop song. It was just the first of several surprises.

Just three dates into her tour – which began at Foxwoods on Friday the 13th – Clarkson seemed genuine and unscripted in her between-tune patter, amiably chatting with fans in the front rows (she even chuckled at one fan who was spotted wearing a “From Justin to Kelly” t-shirt, saying “It’s a horrible movie, but it’s a funny shirt”) and frequently chastising herself for rambling on.

While the simple but versatile stage set (featuring her backing musicians on two multi-level platforms) and the lighting both dazzled, they never over-powered Clarkson and her strong, supple voice. And there was plenty of variety to the music. While her forte has always been big empowering anthems like “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)” and “You Love Me,” she also offered up intimate ballads (the first encore of “Never Again” performed with only piano accompaniment), angular techno (“Let Me Down”), the soaring, choral a cappella intro to “Already Gone” and the country-tinged power ballad “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” performed as a duet with a video of Jason Aldean. A mid-set medley opened with the bluesy wail of “The Trouble With Love Is” and closed with the distinctly Motown-ish ”I Want You.”

The medley made room for several unexpected covers that found her dipping into the songbags of Florence & the Machine, Coldplay (a request Tweeted by a fan) and another “American Idol” alum, Carrie Underwood. In the end though, it all came down to Clarkson and her powerhouse voice, and she delivered a thoroughly engaging and entertaining performance.

Kelly Clarkson Gets Personal at Atlantic City Tour Stop: Concert Review

Posted in : Concerts & Performance

(added 10 days ago)

Kelly Clarkson Gets Personal at Atlantic City Tour Stop Concert ReviewIt’s hard to believe that 2012 marks Kelly Clarkson’s tenth year in the music industry. That’s right, she won the very first season of American Idol a decade ago, long before the show allowed instruments, had pyro or even housed a proper stage.

Clarkson made reference to the platform that launched her career on the second night of her “Stronger” tour, as she joked about people coming up to complement her performances, offering the tainted praise, “You were cute on your karaoke show.”

Indeed, Clarkson is still thanking the audience for voting for her, and as a nod to her fans, is including them in the evolution of her live show. As the singer told a sold-out Atlantic City crowd at Trump Taj Mahal’s Mark G. Etess Arena, she’s welcoming input on her nightly set lists, and will perform requests made through her Twitter feed. “Since the beginning of my career, you all have been involved, voting and all,” she said. “So you still get some control.”

At her first show at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, Clarkson honored a request to perform a cover of Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You.” On Sunday in New Jersey, she was more than thrilled that a fan requested, “The War is Over” from her new album.  She even name-checked the girl -- Stephanie Greenspan -- as if she were a close friend.

In other words, Clarkson is the performer you could totally hang out with, and this is why her audience keeps coming back. She is that rare entertainer that connects with people on a human level while inspiring them through her music to stand strong through any personal trials.

Clarkson addressed a few of her own in dramatic fashion with her opening statement, the song “Dark Side.” A strong visual projected on a screen screamed the newspaper headlines: “Kelly is Fat,” “Record Label Drops Clarkson,” “Make-Up mishap for Clarkson,” and other assorted negative labels such as “Failure,” “Losing Sponsors,” “Album Leaks,” and the aforementioned, “Fat” (curiously, no mention of the recent Ron Paul controversy, however).

Clarkson stood center stage, adorned in a simple sequined top and backed by an eight-piece band, without whom she would “suck,” said the 29-year-old Burleson, Texas native. She set the pace immediately, sandwiching the bombastic “Behind These Hazel Eyes” with a techno, punk version of the kiss-off anthem, “Since U Been Gone” (which she punctuated with an image of a heart monitor). She dusted off “Gone,” a song that was excluded from the last tour, Clarkson lamented. Jason Aldean got the Nat King Cole hologram treatment for the duet, “Don’t You Want To Stay,” and newer songs like “Let Me Down” (a track that would surely blow up if it were the next single) were accompanied by lasers and a lighting spectacle that only added to the excitement. By the time the band mixed in Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times” during Clarkson’s hit “Miss Independent,” people were pumped.

Throughout the evening, Clarkson mixed and matched plenty of material from her post-Idol career, including a medley of songs that included Love Actually’s “The Trouble With Love,” and a doo wop sing-along number, “I Want You.” There were also plenty of opportunities for New Jersey to bop along to the radio hits, including “My Life Would Suck Without You,” “Mr. Know It All,” and the new single, “(What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You) Stronger.”

But it was her quieter moments and well-chosen covers that best showcased what makes Clarkson such a unique talent in the first place.  Well-versed in many musical genres, from metal to country to alternative, Clarkson is a true fan of music, as evidenced by one of the night’s most intriguing surprises, Florence and the Machine’s “Heavy in Your Arms.” She wowed again with Carrie Underwood’s “I Know You Won’t.”

Re-interpretations of her own songs were also a treat and included a quiet rendition of “Already Gone,” with her band adding only a choral background and allowing the audience to savor the singer’s range, as well as a stripped down version of “Never Again,” was inspired by a fan’s suggestion. Clarkson thought it was a “rad idea,” and unveiled her version aided by a lone piano.

Clarkson’s southern charm was palpable throughout the show. Despite her obvious superstar status, she is a personable performer that can have a conversation with an audience member, even if they are in the back of the arena. She complemented outfits, (“I love the sequins, girls”) accepted gifts, chatted with the front row, lovingly chided the “spotlight guy” (she was practically circling the stage trying to stay in it, but found it more humorous than annoying, joking, “I’d love whatever the spotlight guy is drinking”), accidentally introduced “Because of You” as “Breakaway,” (again, her strong sense of self turned the very human moment into an audience bonding opportunity), and bragged about winning $1,000 playing "Wheel of Fortune.” She even made a movie recommendation (Best in Show) riffed about the show Glee (“I’m a choir nerd”), showed her social conscious with a plea for the charity housesofhopeafrica.com, and shared insights into how certain songs wound up on her album,  who helped write them, and how excited she was to work with producer Rodney Jerkins.

However, Clarkson was made sure to point out that as much as she’s considered “Girl Next Door,” she still carried plenty of bite, quipping, “I could never write this song… it’s called 'I Forgive You.'”
That may be precisely how the producers of Idol will feel when the see their inaugural winner mentoring on NBC’s The Voice (following a a Super Bowl bow where she’ll sing the National Anthem), but when it comes to the hard-working Americans still voting for Clarkson with their dollars, she can do no wrong.
